October 8, 2025

By Bob Corwin

In part 2, Wootten 150 players of the 2028 and 2029 classes are discussed. In part 1, players from the 2026 and 2027 classes were featured as well as event background.  The event was held September 27-28, 2025, at the St. James in Springfield, Virginia.

The depth of talent in the younger group was particularly hard to fully absorb even in three sessions. Below are some that stood out in some way.  The average player was probably some level of NCAA major D1 recruit.

Players below are listed alphabetically with height, position and graduation year with school and its state location/home state if different in parathesis. Comments are for the most part brief.

And finally, what are the odds of…

1.        The top player from two different high school classes in the ESPN girls’ rankings or two MaxPreps class player-of-the-year winners being from the same high school in the same year?  I cannot remember this previously happening in the last 20 years.  Kalena Smith (2027) and Tatianna Griffin (2028) of Ontario Christian (CA) High school are both currently ranked #1 by ESPN and were MaxPreps Players-of-the-year in their respective classes in 2024-2025. While the odds of this happening again soon are remote, with players movement and this being a private school, I could see this happening at another private school in the next thirty years but much less likely at a public high school.

2.        A U16 USA Basketball team member (there are 12 in any cycle) and an Olympic or US champion (regardless of age) from another athletic discipline being at the same PUBLIC high school at the same time? Do note there are over 18,000 high schools in the USA.  In 2025, Reece Gilpatrick (mentioned above) was a USA U16 team member while attending Broomfield High School in Colorado as a freshman.  At the same time, Broomfield senior Taylor Greene (age 17) was winning the overall title of best female American Ninja Warrior over a field including women twice her age. She is the youngest female ever to complete the grueling ten-obstacle course (can be found on YouTube). Now throw in that Greene’s father is Gilpatrick’s guidance counselor at Broomfield High School.  I will say the odds of a similar occurrence in the next 80 years at a public school is close to zero!
